Songs to Dance To
Harry Styles – Watermelon Sugar
One Direction poster boy and X Factor superstar Harry Styles has been turning heads with his new solo album, Fine Line. Although it was originally debuted last year in 2019, stand-out track ‘Watermelon Sugar’ has turned into the anthem of summer 2020. The accompanying music video sees Styles cavorting on the beach with a group of guys and girls, dancing, eating fruit and laughing, and singing about wanting “that summer feeling”. This cheerful song is the perfect one to stick on when you want an instant burst of sugary-sweet sunshine pop.
Blossoms – If You Think This Is Real Life
Since their Mercury Music Prize nomination back in 2017, Brit-pop favourites Blossoms have been going from strength to strength as a band. They released their latest studio album Foolish Loving Spaces this year and the third single from it, ‘If You Think This Is Real Life’ right at the end of January. It’s been a slow burner but has steadily climbed up to its spot as one of the top pop songs of the summer. This shimmering indie-pop number has been getting a lot of radio play and is the perfect accompaniment to a barbeque with friends, a day at the beach or a summer road trip to somewhere special.
Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now
A woman that needs no introduction is 24-year-old chart topper, Dua Lipa. The immense success that Lipa has enjoyed in recent years continues with her single, ‘Don’t Start Now’. Taken from her number 1 album Future Nostalgia, it’s yet another track that was released last year but has really taken the world by storm recently as a new summer classic. It’s catchy, upbeat, and sure to get you dancing even when nothing else will. Although the subject matter is somewhat heart-breaking, it’s contrasted by the uplifting pop beats that drive the song relentlessly forward.
Songs to Chill With
Beyoncé – Black Parade
The Queen Bee herself released this surprise track just recently in June 2020. It’s a celebration of freedom, everything she is, and where she comes from set to a relaxed, bass-heavy beat. Though it is a multi-layered song, filled with intriguing lyrics that set you thinking, it’s also simply a pleasure to listen to on a sunny, breezy day. Beyoncé has two hit tracks out this summer as she also appeared on the remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Savage’, a summer bop in its own right. Include both these songs on your summer playlist and you’ll be sure to benefit from the good vibes and incomparable talent of Queen Bey.
Khruangbin – Texas Sun
The Texas trio’s Glastonbury debut may have been postponed for this year, but that hasn’t stopped them producing more outstanding music with their signature chilled out festival vibe. ‘Texas Sun’ comes from the EP of the same name, released this year, and it’s the perfect track to sit back and relax with as you soak up some sunshine. The Spanish guitar riffs create a swirling nostalgic sound, reminiscent of late 60s and early 70s music, whilst guest vocalist Leon Bridges’ voice is the perfect mix of earnest and carefree.
Taylor Swift – cardigan
Pop superstar Taylor has a legion of loyal fans behind her, supporting her in everything that she does. In July this year, she gave them an unexpected treat when she dropped surprise album, folklore. Going back to her acoustic roots, this album has a less produced, poppy sound than her recent studio album Lover, instead opting for folky vocals and melodies. ‘cardigan’ is the first single from the album and is the perfect light-hearted antidote to heavy dance tracks, made even better by Swift’s signature style of singing.
